Engineering software..mechanical/electronic for gear,shafts design? help me out all engineers please!?

Hi, I need a software with which I can preview a mehanical design using gears and shafts..its a changer mechanism with a stepper motor design to provide a filter infront of a light source. I am mostly into electronics but i have to design the mechanical part,which helps move the filter or change from one filter to the other. I would like to use a software where you can simulate and design this. Any help wpuld be great..please adivse on which is the best software to use, freeware or shareware or demo, i dont mind. thanks

1. most popular and in many ways best is SolidWorks. www.solidworks.com they have a student package, but i think it will still be expensive. You might be able to find demoware. It's worth the leg work if you get a copy
