Electronic Design Software

Would more people trust that their vote was counted if the software were open source?

While critics in the United States grow more concerned each day about the insecurity of electronic voting machines, Australians designed a system two years ago that addressed and eased most of those concerns: They chose to make the software running their system completely open to public scrutiny. http://www.wired.com/techbiz/media/news/2003/11/61045

  1. I don't even trust people counting votes by hand.
  2. Every vote should be tracked back by a recit on a computer where people can see if there vote is done properly on a website with a tracking number. I have been programming for years and something like this is done on every e-commerce website. Except you know they don't want a legit system.
  3. That is truly a tough one, but for some reason indeed, not every state uses open source. Still we have problems, the good old paper ballot is the best, and with a receipt even with paper. (No Secret Balloting)
  4. yes, i believe the software should be opened to public scrutiny. but that's too much like doing right. i will never believe that ALL of the polls in the NH primary were incorrect. it's like the gore/bush debacle all over again. all of the polls showed that bush didn't even stand a chance at winning. yet, he supposedly did. and we all know how that turned out.
