Costs to engineer/design a product?

I am doing a New Venture project for school. Part of the project is financial feasibility. Our product is a type of electronic organizational tool. The physical product would consist of a number of existing technologies (e.g. touch-screen), but would need software developed for it. I have contacted a number of engineering firms, but I cannot find one that does this sort of thing. All I need is really ROUGH numbers for the purpose of this project on how much it would cost to have a consulting firm bring the design to a stage where the product can be manufactured. I also need a rough time frame. I am not worried about actually producing this product, just rough numbers on production/design so that I can create some financial projections, as I said, for the purpose of the project.
