how do electronic companies design a cpu/gpu with millions of logic gates?

I know that computers just print the stuff on silicon chips in mass production, but before mass production, how do they DESIGN a chip with SO many logic gates?? I doubt people actually sit there calculating every logic gate function in conjunction with other gates.

1. There are programs whose sole purpose is to model the logic inside a processor. You can build each small component of the processor and then piece them together. There are also programs that take the modeled logic and model the circuitry.
