  1. you can do a lot of things, for sure design circuitry is one of them. personally I´m an electronics engineer and I end up working as an injectin molding engineer, and some times I review the design of the molds. as an engineer you have a large background not only on electronics, so maybe the correct question is what do you really wanto do for work?, but take care choosing an engineering if you´re not sure, is quite a hard career, you need to like it. regards,
  2. To engineer a system, a product or just a design, it requires knowledge of the various components of any specific system within their grasp, the specific limits and characteristics of said components, how they interact with one another in various combinations and what benefits are possible. It's a form of language, communicating an idea either on paper, on a computer design or in hardware in order to express said idea in a very real manifestation. Knowledge of other sciences, other fields often becomes acquired because true engineering is very often quite an interdisciplinary process where the person tries to see the final result and learns of the system requirements to furnish said result - this may require knowledge of other fields of science in order to accomplish this. Whether a person is in the profession of electronics, plumbing, medicine, etc.....really is irrelevant. True engineering is a timeless, creative process based on experience, training, knowledge and encompasses multiple backgrounds, occupations and experiences. If you wish to work on discrete electronic circuitry, then electronic engineering is the path you should seek. Also start reading articles from Bob Pease (you know how to Google his name).
