  1. just about anything works with some particular distro. Ubuntu 7.10 seems to work well on most modern systems as far as CAD and programming is concerned, BUT there is a program that you might run into problems with if you buy an off the shelf system...Blender, Blender is a great 3D modeling and rendering program but it is terribly unstable with integrated graphics chipsets, so going dedicated will really be your only major requirement. Take a look at some Systemax machines on tigerdirect.com a gaming rig by Systemax is surprisingly cheap and the customer service is US based so you know your speaking to someone who speaks native english.
  2. I suggest an Intel chipset. The CPU should be Xeon if you want to use some CAD progarms, i suggest a dual core, or even core duo.To run complex graphic programs you need a hell of a good video card at least 512 Mb/DDR3. You need pretty fast RAM at least 800 Mhz, I suggest Corsair Memories. For gaming you would need a fast HDD to i suggest a raptor hard. The computer would be expensive, but it worth it!!!
  3. As you start to decide on possible brands, use www.google.com "brandname linux" to see what people have to say about setting up linux on the machine. There is also (probably several) Linux hardware compatibility lists that you should find and look over CAREFULLY if you are serious on Linux incompatibility. .
