4. Industrial or Product Design. Though lines between design and engineering are blurred, in general the engineers are concerned about the mechanics of making the thing work. The designers are concerned about overall look of the product and the ergonomics (how well it fits and works for the motions and positioning of the human body) and the range of materials for tactile and visual impact. Engineers won't be concerned about whether a surface has a matte or a glossy finish or whether it is red or blue because that wouldn't usually affect the workings of the product. Designers would care about surface because it affects the distinctiveness of the product, possibly it's ability to be handled and cleaned easily, etc. Go to www.idsa.org for more information about industrial design.
